I’ve been thinking a lot about how far we've come with two-factor authentication (2FA) tech. It used to be all about SMS-based codes, but now we’re seeing a shift toward more advanced methods like biometric tokens and TOTP (time-based one-time password) generators. My question is, why has this transition happened so quickly? Is it mainly due to security concerns, or are companies pushing for these methods for the sake of user convenience as well? I also wonder, will SMS 2FA eventually become completely obsolete?

The shift away from SMS-based 2FA is definitely happening fast, and security is a huge part of it. SMS 2FA has been vulnerable to attacks like SIM swapping, where hackers hijack your phone number and intercept authentication codes. Because of this, companies are looking for more secure alternatives. One of the most common and secure solutions right now is the hotp generator which creates a new, time-limited code every 30 seconds. It’s almost impossible for someone to steal this code because it’s only valid for such a short period of time. You can find more about how TOTP works and why it’s become popular on this website.
