Monstrum 2 is an action video game wherein you must escape a sea fortress while a horrifying monster hunts you down. Developed by Team Junkfish, this 3D survival horror game is the sequel to Monstrum and is an asymmetrical online multiplayer that lets you both do co-op and versus mode.
Similar to games like Dead by Daylight and Resident Evil Resistance, Monstrum 2 features 4v1 multiplayer and allows you to either play as an escaping human or one of the many monstrosities with unique abilities. However, this has various major differences to the first game and comes with a boatload of issues.

It's hard to make an asymmetric horror game feel unique after so many iterations on the already niche genre, and Monstrum II falls prey to this conundrum. Monstrum II brings nothing new to the genre's staple gameplay mechanics and has little to offer below the game's surface. That's not to say that Monstrum II can't be fun, but it just doesn't offer the same level of quality as other horror titles in its current form.
Monstrum II is similar to Dead By Daylight and Friday The 13th where one player assumes the role of a hideous monster that hunts down a team of defenseless human prisoners. The four prisoners must restore power to either a helicopter or submarine by flipping 10 different switches before the timer runs out or before they are all slaughtered. The map is procedurally generated each round offering players a new experience every time they exit their cell. The real horror, however, is the abysmal experience of actually playing the game.
In the game's current state, it is severely unpolished both mechanically and graphically. The maps are dark and condensed making it hard for players to find their way to the next power supply. Procedurally generated maps sound like a good idea at first, but the layout and lack of lighting make each map feel the same. Generally, there are two or three square buildings that house an array of switches that players will need to travel between via an outdoor scaffolding system. The maps reuse the same assets over and over which further makes each map feel the same as the last.
If a seasoned asymmetric horror enthusiast were to play Monstrum II, they would be sorely disappointed with the quality of the game. But for gamers who want to jump in and goof around with a few buddies, the game has some charm. Jumping into a random lobby probably won't net the same level of enjoyment as playing with a group of friends. In its current state, Monstrum II doesn't have the quality of similar titles, and as such won't last long without serious improvements. There needs to be more for the prisoners to do other than run around and turn on switches. Monsters need to be nerfed, or players need to be given better items to deal with them. Monstrum II doesn't stack up against its competition, and it really needs to focus on refining its gameplay before launch.
